I must confess that with my writing and the pondering that goes with this process I do very much improve my understanding and clarity with the subject matter, this article more than any I have written was more confronting and damning for me than any other, as I have had to face one of my greatest shortcomings with my communication with others, with how I have blamed and diminished others with providng feedback when my boundaries have been crossed in the past.

In my Listening of others … myself as well … I hear the frustrations and upset we have with others … especially with others BEING THEMSELVES! How we resist accepting them for who they are. We so often contain angst, anger, despair and frustration within ourselves with our efforts…our desires …our wants…TO…SEE THEM CHANGE!!
Fear not fellow humans, there is hope and peace for us with this. Perhaps we need only do 4 things and miracles will unfold before us.
1. Get clarity with who they are…not “why” but “what” they are…without judgment but clear objectivity … with empathy
2. Take your time and get clarity with what we want for ourselves …what does our heart tell us?
3. Set boundaries carefully…establish fences so to speak, that are clearly communicated in a proactive manner … in a kind and forthright manner
4. Establish clear consequences for anyone who makes an effort to broach the fence…the boundary
Perhaps the real root of the issue is not another’s behavior with being themselves but our lack of clarity with them, with ourselves and our unwillingness to be resolute with calmly thought out consequences?
How many people will try to climb a fence that is clearly marked “Electrified…Danger…Do not Touch or you WILL be shocked” …my experience is that when the boundaries are clearly communicated and consequences made non negotiable, they ARE respected… not many folks trying to cross the DMZ in Korea are there?
And for those who do attempt to cross the line …do what you said you will do… which may mean walk away. Do remember we do not need their permission to establish OUR boundaries and consequences. We need only firmly communicate them in advance.
